This week's Beet is dedicated to one PAUA-ful lady, Sydney Gaylord! One of the coolest ladies I knew, Sydney lost her struggle to brain cancer this week. She will forever be in my heart! Love you girl!

This week, The Heart Beet reports from the beaches of Mother Earth. Mary Kent gets her shine on, revealing why she's hooked on one seriously, shimmering shell!
Paua, otherwise known as Abalone, is an incredibly spectacular shell native to the shores of New Zealand. The Maori, indigenous people of New Zealand, are infamous for their use of Paua in jewelry and healing, as they held this Godly treasure from the sea in such high regard. Paua is a mollusk, coming from the same family that includes clams and scallops, but make no mistake, there is nothing that outshines this shimmering shell (not even the lipstick I wore in the 80s). The Paua shell sparkles, glistens, and twinkles in magnificent colors that once you have caught a glimpse, you will never be able to take your eyes off it. Oh my gosh! I'm totally in love! The first time I truly fell in love with the shell, it was wrapped around the neck of one of my BFFs, Elizabeth Timberlake. The blues merging into turquoise with shimmers of green, coral, and pink are seriously a combo that can't be forgotten! Of course, when I saw her necklace I blurted, "What is that around your neck?" When I was told it was called Paua (pronounced PAH-WAH) and that she had gotten it in New Zealand, I laughed out loud, as the word power immediately came to mind. I'm sure I had seen it before, but something about Elizabeth's necklace really got me hooked! All I can say is, oh yeah, there is some serious power emanating from this shell.
 In my searches for Paua shells, I came across one of the funniest things, EVER! Fred and Myrtle Flutey, the cutest couple I have seen in long time, popped up in my Explorer browser. I did a little reading and discovered that this duo holds the largest collection of Paua shells. So large, in fact, that they donated their entire collection to a museum in Christchurch. About the same time I found Fred and Myrtle, my parents announced they were off on a NZ adventure. And, guess who sent them on a Paua expedition? Yours truly! I had been making Paua necklaces and definitely wanted more shells from the heartland - not to mention a few photos from the most famous collection of power. So, my parents got the award for bringing me back a bag full of Paua pieces and some great photos of Fred and Myrtle's collection. Thanks awesome explorers! The beauty this shell shines forth with is truly stunning. Utterly hypnotizing and really does have a kind of magical effect! I can't explain it, but I definitely feel better after looking at it. It can bring you back to the sea with it's majestic colors and wave-like lines. Being the research nerd that I am, I did some digging and found out that Paua does have a few healing abilities up it's little shell. So, here's why I'm shimmering over Paua:

- Helps arthritis and other joint disorders.
- Stimulates intuition and imagination
- Helps express emotions easily and effortlessly.
- Encourages calmness and soothing in emotional situations.
- Aids in treatment of spinal degeneration diseases.
- Encourages positive self-talk, self-love and self-discipline.
- Helps release stubbornness.
