"Just for today, do not anger.
Just for today, do not worry.
Do your work with appreciation.
Be kind to all.
In the morning and at night hold your hands in prayer,
meditate on and say these words."

- Dr. Mikao Usui, Founder of Reiki

This week, The Weekly Beet reports on the incredible powers that the human hand can have on the body. Mary Kent gets energized, revealing an ancient Japanese secret powerful enough to blow your mind away!

One of the most effective, yet simple practices in the realm of Alternative Medicine today, Reiki, is an ancient form of healing that originated in Tibet and uses the human hand to heal illness, injury, and to speed recovery from surgery. Reiki literally translates from Japanese to mean universal life force energy and was re-discovered in the early part of the 20th century by a Japanese man called Dr. Mikao Usui, who set out on a quest to find the key to the miracles accomplished by Jesus and the Buddha. His search took him from Japan to the University of Chicago and back again, where he delved through the teachings of Christianity, Buddhism, and the ancient texts of India. However, it wasn't until he fell and hurt his toe did he completely understand what any of the texts meant: that the power to heal our selves comes from within. As simplicity would serve high, Dr. Usui put his hands to his toe, noticed the miraculous healing effect, and that was the re-discovery of Reiki. Dr. Usui quickly learned that Reiki was a form of healing that must holistically treat the entire patient, not just the area affected by injury or pain. In other words, to heal the body completely from illness, one must focus on the healing of the spiritual realm just as much as the physical one.

But, the question we all want to know is where does the source of Reiki energy come from? That, my dear readers, is a billion dollar answer that will most likely never reveal itself. Such mystery that can not be proven will instead end in the hands of scientific debate, denial, and eventually on the big screen, where the unproven can become real! Obi-Wan Kanobi called it the 'force' in Star Wars, the Chinese refer to it as chi, Einstein coined it in e=mc², and yet so many Americans still refuse to acknowledge such an energetic existence. We put Reiki to the test and found that not only does it work, it connected our hearts to something unexplainable and simply miraculous! We experienced a deep state of relaxation, which helped rid the body of fear and anxiety.

Here's what's really so key about Reiki:
  • Reduces stress by relaxing the mind, body, and spirit.

  • Triggers the body's natural ability to heal itself.
  • Balances negative emotions such as fear, worry, and anger.

  • Eliminates insomnia.
  • Strengthens the immune system.
  • Speeds the recovery process brought on by injury and surgery.

  • Alleviates pain from headaches to arthritis.

  • Detoxifies the body.

During sessions, clients lie on a table and a practitioner simply places their hands on different places along the body's energy centers known as chakras. There is no right or wrong way to Reiki, as all healing leads to the same end point. Today, there are practitioners all over the United States and Europe who are practicing and teaching the ancient healing of Reiki. Thankfully, western medicine has recently incorporated Reiki into many of its cancer healing modalities, as it is proving incredible benefits in pre and post oncological surgeries. The beauty of Reiki is that it can be learned by anyone in three levels. The first level can be learned in a few days and can be practiced on the self and family members. More advanced learning takes place in levels two and three, as practitioners must continue the certification of these levels to treat patients. But, Reiki lies within all of us and can easily be done on the self without the supervision of a practitioner. All it takes is an open mind and a belief in your heart. Click here to learn more.

Open your hands! The force lies within! Don't miss a Beet. Stay tuned for next week.

Love,

Mary Kent

"The Weekly Beet is simply exciting! Never before has Alternative Medicine been
researched and presented in such an 'upbeet' way."

- Dr. Andrew Weil

"The Weekly Beet is a great gift to the world of health and happiness. It is also a testimony to the power of one person to make a difference in the world. If you have a dream and a passion, now is the time to step forward and make your dreams come true!"

- Joshua Rosenthal, Founder of The Institute of Integrative Nutrition
