This week, The Weekly Beet reports straight from the strawberry patch. Mary Kent picks strawberries, revealing the berry incredible benefits these red, little hearts have on the body!
'Tis the season to go strawberry picking! Known as Fragaria ananassa, strawberries are members of the Rosaceae plant family and definitely one of the most famous berries around! Eaten with cream at Wimbledon, sung in lyrics by the Beatles, digitized for bonus points in Atari's Ms. PacMan, and named for a little girl's doll, these heart-shaped berries have quite the universal reputation! But, it isn't just their claim to fame that has us interested, it's what's on the inside, of course! With more than 600 varieties, strawberries contain more vitamin C than any of the citrus fruits, and a ton of folate that should keep pregnant women chomping away! It's the chemicals known as anthocyanins that give strawberries their distinctive, brilliant red color, as well as their powerful antioxidant punch. But, it's their unique shape that gives them their undeniably loving appeal, which can make anyone fall head over heels over such a sweet berry.
Here's a bit more to love about the berry healthy strawberry:
It's best to buy organic strawberries from your local health food store. Our favorite brand is Driscoll's. Going organic means you eliminate your body's exposure to chemicals such as methyl bromide, chloropicrin, captan, malathion, diprom, vendex, kelthane, and avermectin that conventional strawberry growers use! Add strawberries to salads, vinaigrette, smoothies, and oatmeal to get a healthy, sweet addition to your food. Click here to see some strawberry recipes.
Eat berry many strawberries this season! Don't miss a Beet. Stay tuned for next week.
Love,
Mary Kent
