"There is one friend in the life of each of us
who seems not a separate person, however dear and beloved,
but an expansion, an interpretation, of one's self, the very meaning of one's soul."

~ Edith Wharton

"A single rose can be my garden...a single friend, my world."

Leo F. Buscaglia

This week, The Heart Beet reports straight from a Californian adventure to visit a best friend from many years past. Mary Kent keeps the old, revealing the incredible soul benefits of golden friendships.

Recently, I headed out to California for a family wedding, but knew I had to make a very important stop on the way. My best friend from growing up, Kathleen, lives in the glamorous mountains outside of San Francisco in a divine, little place called Danville and it was just perfectly timed for me to pay her a visit. I truly believe there are times in our lives when our spirit guides us backwards to reconnect with our past in order to lift us up and take us back home to the place where we once were children. Reconnecting with a golden oldie is just the antidote needed to carry us back to those wonderful memories that lie tucked away, hidden so deep within the heart.

My entire childhood is flooded with memories of the adventures of Mary Kent and Kathleen. Growing up, Kathleen, was rebellious, hilarious, clever, sneaky, and at times a little bit of a smarty pants. She always talked back, spoke her truth, was totally flamboyant, could dance like a superstar, and had an electric energy that always kept me rolling with laughter. She had strawberry blonde pigtails, the straightest bangs that caused serious amounts of jealousy to my cow-licked hairline, and the cutest freckles you have ever seen. Her eyes would squint when she laughed out loud and her smile would light up your entire life if you let it. She was more coordinated than me in dance lessons, could tap better, and knew that showing off her spirit was something God intended for her to do and she was definitely not afraid to show it! She was connected to the spiritual world at an early age, truly thanks to her mother, and that is something I am so grateful that has had an influence on me. Kathleen was the best friend a girl could ever have because she brought out a side of me that was more courageous, less guarded, and totally fearless. She made just about everything in my life so much better, so much easier, and really, just so much more fun.

Kathleen and I were always up for a little bit of dramatic role playing. Since her mother had introduced us to the mystery and suspense of Alfred Hitchcock at a very young age, I took on the role of the silent director, causing much more trouble than I was ever held accountable for. But, Kathleen never cared that I cut off her pigtails right before a family wedding or enticed her to run away when my parents were in Europe. She didn't get mad at me when I received no punishment, while she indeed was spanked. She never cared if I beat her at swim team or scored more hoops than she did in church basketball. She just let me be in the limelight, playing out my Sandy from Grease obsession and supported me while I sang "You're The One That I Want" over and over and over again. (By the way, I'm listening to this song, as I make my final edits! :) ) Kathleen knew I was already born a star and there was nothing for me to prove. It was as if she had been programmed from the beginning of time to stand in accordance with a higher level of knowing exactly what it meant to be a best friend. She just loved me, unconditionally and wholeheartedly, and her loyalty up until this very day has stood the test of time.

Something that sticks out tremendously is that as kids, being the good southern girls that we were, Kathleen and I would always go to church together. In our adorable, smocked dresses from a little shop called the Dandy Lion, whether we were giggling during the sermon or sneaking out during the offering, somehow it was the preacher who never failed to see the beauty of such a bonded friendship. I believe he rather liked our free spirited behavior! And, while we both never listened to anything that was going on because we were too busy laughing and having a good time, there was definitely a divine plan of operation going on behind the scenes that over time would get our attention sooner or later. And, over time, it did. As Kathleen and I grew apart she stayed in South Carolina for college, and I went to Connecticut. Later, she went to Spain and I went to France. Then, She went to California, and I went to London. Yet, every time I would return home from some far away place, it seemed that Kathleen would be visiting at the same time. And, the more distance that came and the more that happened, it seemed the more our spirits were brought together to show us just how far each of us had come and just how much inner wisdom and higher learning we both had learned. And then, just like that, her marriage came and went. Her first child, her second child, and then her third. And, the next thing I knew we were both 35 and I was standing right in the middle of her own home with her very own family. And, as time stood still, I laughed hysterically because I saw very clearly that God definitely had a sneaky plan of creation for us both! And, Kathleen laughed to because that's what friends do who are on the same wavelength. While Kathleen had been out creating a family, she helped me remember what my spirit had been creating within myself at the very same time. We could see such a divine presence guiding us in both of our lives, even back to when we were the little girls who weren't necessarily paying attention to God's message. During my visit, Kathleen validated that following your heart, listening to God's guidance within yourself and your inner voice, giving everything to God to unfold in a divine, perfected timing, and giving yourself some grace are all very real themes and actions that are needed in order to live easily and effortlessly, which is the way we were intended to live. Through her support and believing in me over the years, she reminded me that I had tapped into a part of myself where divine creation was sparked through painting, writing, and healing. She reminded me of what courage I had to walk away from many relationships that didn't feel right and to move on when my soul was calling me to do so and how, truly, I had created the most beautiful world within myself based upon the 'light' action I had constantly chosen to take. She spoke to me in a way that didn't involve going into the details, but understood the bigger picture, something that my linear mind would think that distance would intentionally keep apart. And, I spoke to her of the intense imagination and high levels of creativity I saw in her oldest daughter, Elizabeth, and how very important it was to keep that part of her activated and alive. And, after every bit of enlightenment, Kathleen and I would just smile and laugh like we did when we were children, with nothing having changed except maybe the addition of a line or two of wisdom on our faces. I observed that those two little church mice who had once never paid attention to the message, had turned into their very own little gurus, preaching words of wisdom and power to heal each other.

Lucky for me, over time, Kathleen blossomed into an incredibly spiritual person and it has always been her faith that has helped me through many of my most lost, confusing, and doubtful moments. She has helped me so very much return to the love and the light that I am within myself and reminds daily just how very lucky I am to be me. She calls me a light and tells me that I must keep on shining! I really don't think my words even express how lucky I am to have this special soul in my life. I truly believe it only takes one friend to believe in you, to lift you up when you are wounded, and to tell you exactly what you need to hear at exactly the right time. My golden oldie, Kathleen is just that one friend for me. I know that friendships like these are ordered from the heavens and I am so very lucky to have this one connection held so deep within my soul Thank you, Kathleen, and to your amazing daughter, Elizabeth, who now keeps that childie spirit alive for you! And, thank you both for the most incredible of soul visits and for helping me to keep the spirit of that playful, little girl alive in me. "Laugh at your mistakes! You gotta laugh at your mistakes!" The lyrics of your seven year-old Elizabeth-an songwriter that was made for us 'grown-ups', will stay with me forever.

And, to every one reading this, my advice this week is to reconnect with someone from your childhood. Go back in time. It's so very healing. It's so very beautiful. And, it's so very important for the growth of your soul.

Make new friends, but please, guard the old with everything you have!! Listen to your Heart Beet. Don't miss a Beet. Stay tuned for next week.

PS. Mary Kent is wearing jacket by North Face. She is loving her best friend from growing up, Kathleen Draffin Thompson. They are in Danville, CA.

PSS. And, by the way, what's a soul visit without a little bit of shopping? We went to the most incredible shop called Filthy Gorgeous! It's a twist of spiritual antiques coupled with some treasures from the sea. I loved it! And, I loved LuluLemon. The best yoga pants EVER! Check it out here!
