This week, The Weekly Beet reports on the incredible benefits of the power of prayer! Mary Kent goes silent, while sporting the latest in heavenly jewelry, the saint beaded bracelets, that we discovered in Lourdes.
Whether it's morning or evening, spoken or unspoken, alone or in company, prayer is the single most popular form of alternative medicine practiced today. But, to suggest that the power of prayer falls into an alternative category is really quite a silly thing to say! Prayer is the easiest and most natural way to seek guidance, to confess, to rejoice, to connect, to relax, to send love, and to help us be in the moment of every single day. No matter what faith is followed, the power of prayer can get to work for anyone right here, right now! Every religion guides the follower through prayer and most incorporate the prayer bead to assist in the spiritual acts of prayer, meditation, chanting, and devotion. For example in Buddhism and Hinduism the meditational prayer beads are called Japa Malas, in the Muslim faith they are called Tasbih or Dhikr beads, in Christianity the ancients used the knotted rope during prayer, and today the Catholics use the Rosary. In each religion, whether in bracelet or necklace form, a specific number of beads symbolize the number of prayers that must be counted and some beads are even made out of sacred materials that smell simply divine! But whatever the type of bead, used or not used, prayer holds the same purpose for us all- a chance to converse with God, any deity, the spirit world, or a higher power of one's choice. Something that powerful just can't be considered alternative!
The power of prayer can take us into a realm where miracles happen, a place that science, no matter how hard it tries, simply can not explain! However, with amazing people like Dr. Larry Dossey, Dr. Harry Koening, and studies like the Mantra Project at Duke University, science is definitely giving the healing benefits of prayer a thorough investigation. To date, there have been more than 1200 studies investigating the correlation between prayer and health with results showing more than half to reveal a positive connection! And, today, more than 70 medical schools in the United States are offering courses that tie in religion and spirituality with medicine. Now, that's what we call simply unBEETable!
With peace of mind and a piece of heaven, prayer can touch all aspects of our body, mind, and spirit. Here's why we could all benefit from a bit of silence in our life. The power of prayer can:
As Dr. Koenig, Professor at Duke University Medical Center and author of the Healing Power of Faith says, "Prayer is powerful medicine - sometimes for the body, often for relationships, and always for the soul." No matter what religion you follow, prayer is an incredible practice that should be incorporated into any daily routine!
Keep the faith! It's time to say a little prayer. Don't miss a Beet. Stay tuned for next week.
Love,
Mary Kent
